RM of Nipawin’s story
The Rural Municipality of Nipawin No. 487 incorporated as a rural municipality on December 9, 1912. It surrounds the town of Nipawin and the villages of Aylsham and Codette, and also takes in the localities of Carlea, Elk Hill, Inkster, Klemmer, Lost River and Pontrilas. The RM office is in Codette.
Much of the area's recreation centres on the Saskatchewan River. Nipawin & District Regional Park, in a boreal forest of birch, jack pine and tamarack just north of the town, was designated a regional park in 1965 and opened in 1968. It has a campground, cabins, river access and a golf course. The Evergreen Golf and Country Club, an 18-hole course, was built in 1957 and was once touted as one of the top one hundred courses in Canada.
The RM is also home to the Nipawin Hydroelectric Station, as well as the Nipawin & District Living Forestry Museum, Wapiti Valley Regional Park and the Maurice Street Provincial Protected Area.
